Joker Sketch card process pics

Mornin....I guess I'm going to alternate between process pics & war of the worlds just to break it up...so without further or due...here's a little joker action. I did this card primarily with markers, just a bit of watercolor here an there for the coat.

Card 1) The first step is rough pencil shapes in a very light pencil,( 2h/3h/4h) and I have excluded this step. The next step is to go over it with detail using a mechanical pencil & you can see where I was debating to put the pupil in his eyes or not. I was thinking about doing that mad hatter look.

Card 2) In this stage I do the pre-Inking with a .1 or .3 liner. You have to consider what medium your using, so that the coloring stage doesn't make this ink bleed. For instance, watercolors will not make most inks bleed..however alcohol based markers such as copics, or prisma's will, so you'll have to use special liners or carbon ink in order to prevent that. Also one more tip...ERASE very well if using markers...because once you lay the marker down, the pencil will not come off....with watercolors your fine. I used copic Multiliners for this stage.

card 3)Here I just touched his face & hair with some marker.

Card 4)On this one I watercolored the coat with some basic purples & added the pinstripes with a marker. I also added some darker greens to the hair.

Card 5) Here I pretty much finished everything off, suit vest, flower, & face. I also added a thicker line around the outside with a .5 liner before I decided to paint the background black. But it wasn't a total waste because I could then color the whole background black very quickly without having to worry about getting too close to the actual edges of the joker. I also used my brush pen to add some darker lines to the figure itself.

Card 6)This one is fairly obvious.....black background. Thats it.

Card 7) Last card....all the white highlights with my white gel pen & then the writing on the wall in the back. At first I used a red gel pen for this & the black just bled through. it left a very dark red on there but wasn't visible. I ended up going over it with a red prisma pencil & then found some acrylic pigmented ink that I highlighted certain parts of the letters & it gave it a somewhat natural look.

War Of The Worlds sketch card preview for Cult stuff

I figured we'd take a break from posting the step by step process pics & show you a preview of one of my war of the worlds cards that will be included in the upcoming set by cult stuff over in the U.K. This is a set that was inspired by H.G. wells literature & not by the movies. To be honest, I've never read it, so I went and grabbed a collection of his works..& I loved it. I love all the research you have to do for sketch card sets, yes, sometimes its a huge pain, but when you get to read great stories for research it opens you up to things you would never think to do. This card was completed with copic markers & multiliners.

Morning Everyone! Alright this will be much the same as yesterdays, but people seem to be taking interest, so I'll do a few more & then I'll start posting some of my most recent project work, which is for a war of the worlds sketch card set for cult stuff over in the U.K. Today we have Harley, which is one of the more favored cards I did from this set

Was debating between a gun & a Hammer, but the gun just seemed to fit better.

card 3)Started with the Getting all the colors in with watercolor & bit of marker. The hardest thing for me about watercolor is patience. you have to wait for one layer to dry before you start laying darker tones in. If you don't wait then the color gets muddy & you overwork the paper, so I'll usually work on another part of the card while one section dries. You can see I did the gun in gray marker tones while one of the other parts was drying. Typically I use dark blues as an undertone for gun metal, I didn't want it to blend in with her costume too much, since I used the dark blue there already.

Card 4)doesn't look like I did much here...actually, I think its Identical to the last card....the reason for this is because I did more work on the other cards & since I was scanning them all in at once instead of individually I scanned this one as well....so yeah, basically I did nothing here.

Card 5) On this card, although I only did a few things here, it really starts making the card come together. I colored up the gun with copics, added lipstick with copics & added the yellow in her teeth and eyes also with marker, added some cool grays to her costume. The reds in her costume weren't coming out saturated enough so I went over the watercolor with a lipstick red marker

Card 6)Background watercolors applied here. Used a wet on wet technique with doc martens watercolors in order to get that bleed effect. I wanted you to be able to tell that it was watercolor. ( wet on wet is when you lay down a very watery color, or just water & drop in dabs of another color. Warning paper will bow)I chose these yellows red and browns for the background, which in hind site, I wish I had used cool colors to make the character pop a bit more. I chose various splattering methods to associate the character with chaos.

Card 7) Last card is all the bells & whistles. I will take my brush pen, or a thicker marker and re-ink my outlines so we have a nice thick edge & not a bumpy look. I used textured watercolor paper for this project & it is a pain to draw on with a pen, so I decided to use a brush to do the re-inking in order to smooth the initial inks out. After that we use a white gel pen to add the stitching back in and additional highlights. Since the colors of this characters costume are so closely related to the background colors on the color wheel, it was very Important to have a nice dark outline accompanied with a very clear white outline...otherwise she would've just blended right in.

Catwomen Sketch card Process Pics/Tutorial

Hello all, hope everyones morning went ok. Today I'm going to begin posting a progression of some of my DC commissioned sketchcards that I had recently posted. The client asked me to catalog progress pics of a few of the characters & I figured, " hey, Might as well do it for all of them". These progression pics are a little all over the place since I had to focus on time saving, so if I did the skin tone for one card, I did the skin tones for all so I didn't have to mix the colors again etc...

Card 1) Typically you'll see a stage before this one with basic shapes, or silhouettes, just to get an idea of where I want to go. I'll usually use a very light pencil (2h/3h/4h)to block everything in, then I go over it with detail using a mechanical pencil (no particular brand, just whatevers layin around)which is what you see here. I actually had started to draw the newer costume catwoman & the client asked me to go with this style instead.

card 3)Started with the skin tone in watercolor...not much else here. You can see that I got a bit sloppy but thats ok...watercolor is fairly forgiving, the use of a little water will lift off most of the color.

Card 4)Started inking the suit with copics. I like to use a dark blue as an undertone to black so thats what I did here, not really caring about the stitches, because we'll highlight those at the end.

Card 5) Jumped quite ahead here, added the blacks, with my copic sketch brush tip. Also added the lip color & the yellow around the eye sockets.The last thing you'll notice is that I've decided the background color would be a pinkish red color, so I started to add some of those colors to the outer edges of the suit to show reflections of the background.

Lastly I did a white outline around her in order to separate her from the background, since she is dark and so is the background.

Bombshells Sketch Card - " Head Huntress"

Here is the last preview sketch card I'm allowed to show ( only allowed to sho three), for the bombshells: women of war set, put on by Bad Axe studios. That is until until the set is released, then I'm allowed to show them all. This was one of the more risque cards I did. She is obviously a sexy barbarian type, with an affinity for collecting trophies of her kills. I wanted to add a few more heads that were a bit more aged in order to show longevity...but I didn't want to clutter it up...since I'm still getting used to drawing on a 2.5 x3.5 inch canvas. I have a lot of respect for sketch card artists who can pack a ton of detail into their cards.....adding TOO much detail can make a decent card go south real fast. Done in Copic Markers. Vampirella / Vampi-Daughter sketch card commission

Last Of my recent commissions was this one. I called it Vampi-daughter. A client who wishes to remain nameless has a dughter who loves Vampirella. So he decided to have me draw his daughter as Vampirella. Which is all fine & good, but I had somewhat of a dilemma. What's the first thing you think about when you imagine Vampirella.....the costume right? Here's a pic so you get the idea.

It would seem a bit strange to me, to clothe a young child in this manner. Although the style that this drawing was done in is very cartooney, I'm still basing on a real person, who happens to be a child...so it felt weird. None the less it still needed to be done, so I had to find a way around it. After a few thumbnails done in pencil we went back & forth until we decided on a caricature & pose. This is how it turned out. The client loved it & he even had me design their family christmas card. I'll post that one later. Done in watercolor & marker.

Lego Batman & Superman VS Jaws psc commission

Here's another commission request I received & its a little strange, but was actually kind of fun because I've never drawn lego characters before & to try to compose a battle scene on such a small canvas was interesting. Its Lego Batman & Superman VS Jaws. The subject was based on a design the client had already drawn & was originally requested by his son. So he wanted to see my rendition of it. This is a two card puzzle piece, drawn as one. Each card is 2.5x3.5 and the piece was done with copic markers & watercolors.

The Ritual

I forgot to post this little number when I was posting the rest of my Sketch cards for breygent marketing's "worlds of fantasy" set. So here she is. This was my base card (or printed trading card) to be part of the normal set. This card was actually converted to a 3d lenticular card, which turned out pretty cool, but it scans horribly, so I've decided to post the normal version.3d Lenticular in case you don't know ( I had to look it up) is like those old hologram stickers or trading cards, that look like certain parts of the picture has been pushed back.

For this set, although it was relatively open ended, we did have a few guidelines to follow & witches were one of the subjects listed. So this is my version of a witch. Instead of having a broom wielding dark vixen, I decided to have a more realistic approach. real witches perform rituals, chanting & blood sacrifices to the energies they wish to summon....so thats what I was going for...but I had to keep her sexy, because that's typically what's desired for projects like these. Was thinking of submitting this one to a contest, but wasn't sure.

Supergirl

Hope Everyone had a great weekend!nOK...last one of this 10 card dc set that I did as a commission is supergirl. Another one done in watercolor & some copic markers. I'm going to post some progress pics of the cards as the customer had a request to see them. I don't usually do stuff like that, so I figured I'd just scan them all in as I went.

Its a bird, its a plane, its SUPERMAN!!!!

Would'nt be a proper set of DC characters without superman. so here's my cutesy rendition of him. Done in sketch card size for a client. Watercolor & copic markers. I kinda like how this one turned out as well.

Poison Ivy Sketch Card Commission

Well...you know the story already, but I'll repeat it anyway. Sketch card commission as part of a batman/dc themed series requested by my buddy chad. Super cool guy to work with. This one is of the lovely poison ivy done in that cutesy style I do.

Funny story how I started to do characters in this manner. I usually like the darker stuff, demons, blood & gore. Well I had a shop owner tell me that i would have to draw cuter stuff in order for him to carry my art...I of course thought it was lame..but I came up with this style. It took me a long time to get used to & even though its less detailed Its actually harder for me to do at times, but people tend to like it.

This one was done in watercolor & copic marker.

The Penguin sketch card commission

Another Batman themed sketch card that was commissioned. This one is of the Penguin....kinda cute....kinda creepy. I will always remember the way the penguin looked on the old school T.V. show with adam west, but I really loved the way Tim Burton envisioned him so I tried to merge the two styles here.

Created with Doc Martins Watercolors & Copic markers, as well as a gel pen. I think I should have chosen some different colors on the background to add more contrast between it & the character, but I wanted to use all of those browns & greens in order for your brain to associate it with sludge & toxic waste.

Another personal sketch card (PSC) for a client of mine to go along with the batman down below. This is a 2.5 x3.5 watercolor piece on watercolor paper of Dr. Freeze looking down at his little snow globe of his wife nora.Did a total of 10 batman related cards. Also used a couple of copic markers on this one, plus a gel pen.

Well, I may have posted this piece a while ago, but I thought I would post again, as it is the centerpiece of a batch of commissioned sketch cards I did for a awesome client of mine. He purchased this 9x12 watercolor piece from me & decided to have me do 10 sketch cards to accompany it, all based on DC characters & done in the same style. I will be posting the sketch cards depicting superman, supergirl,poison ivy, penguin, catwoman, mr. freeze, joker, harley quinn, two face, and batgirl, over the next week or so. On top of that he ordered two other pieces completely unrelated to these. Stay tuned, I'll start posting them tomorrow! Happy friday!
