"Martian Concept 1" - War of the Worlds sketch card for Cult Stuff

Since I have posted pretty much all of my bombshells cards, I figured I'd start posting the 2nd set of 20 cards that I did for cult stuff's War of The Worlds set, based on the novel by H.G. wells. I had a lot of fun with this set. I also decided to take limited progression scans of these 20.

I decided to play around with the concepts of the martians with this next batch. I felt that my previous martians came out a bit cute so I wanted to focus on making them a bit more menacing.
So here is the first one I came up with. you can see there were a lot of elements that I added that differ from the novel. Hope you like it.

2.5 x3.5 inches - copic markers.

"Amongst the Red weeds" War of the worlds sketch card for cult stuff.

Here is another war of the worlds sketch card, done in copic markers. I decided to depict a moment from the novel, towards the end where the protagonist is walking amongst the quickly growing red weeds that seemed to sprout up uncontrollably when the martians first arrived.

take it easy!....I'll have progress pics starting with my next 20 WotW cards.

"Look!" War of the Worlds Sketch Card for Cult Stuff

Here's another somewhat scenic sketch card for The war of the worlds set I worked on. Created with Copic markers, & a brush pen.

I entitled this one "Look!" because that's what I would imagine the little dude is saying. Well, actually I would imagine he's saying Holy $hit!, but since they didn't use that terminology in that region/era "look!" will have to suffice.

Happy Friday!

War Of the Worlds Sketch Card for Cult Stuff

Another war of the worlds sketch card done for Cult Stuff over in the U.K. Again, I have drawn a martian getting ready to feed. This card is a little farther away, and as I have said before, the martian is just a little too cute for me. I used a simple blotchy red background for this to make the grey skin tone pop. Done with copic markers, gel pen & a bit of acrylic.

Happy Hump Day!

Tripod Sketch Card for Cult Stuff's "War of The Worlds" set

Hello all, I figured I'd start monday off with another sketch card from Cult Stuff's War of the Worlds set, featuring a tripod disintegrating & blowing stuff up!Done with copic markers. Based on the novel by H.G. Wells, although this one deviated a bit because the machine isn't holding the heat ray, its just emitting it from under its hood. I chose to illustrate it this way because I like to visualize the same thing in many different ways. Sometimes this is my Downfall, because when somebody gives me a general description my mind can run wild with a 100 different ways to draw something, that I tend to overanalyze & it may slow me down. I've always wanted to do conceptual work, that way I can just get out all of the different designs in my head & only render out the ones the client wants.

Anyway, On a side note, the Company Cult Stuff who I'm doing the cards for has decided to use my Steampunk tripod as artwork on one of their promo cards promoting their set.

Promotional trading cards are limited prints of cards usually distributed at a special event such as a convention, and this tends to be the only way to get them, that way the attendees have are the only ones allowed to get their hands on them, making them a bit more rare for collectors.

I was also notified that one of my cards was used in an add for the set in Non-sports update magazine(NSU) which is a publication dealing specifically with non sports trading cards.

I'll post both promotions when I have approval.

War of The Worlds Sketch Card for Cult Stuff

Another one of my War of the worlds sketch cards for Cult Stuff - Coming soon! here we have another scenic card, that was created using copic markers & a gel pen, I think I used my brush pen a bit as well. I wanted it to be kind of peaceful & serene, yet menacing at the same time. Used a lot of muted colors like cool greys, dim greens, & some light blues. pretty much handled a lot of the tones in greys & spot colored & blended afterward with color.

War Of the Worlds sketch card for Cult Stuff!

What's this? Could it be? Another Tripod sketch card for the War of The Worlds non-sports trading card Set I'm working on for Cult Stuff? Yup.

This one I did in a sepia tone, inked sepia colored micron, colored with copics & used a little white acrylic paint here and there. Looking at it now, I suppose it could've benefitted from a little black...but hey...there's always next time. I've finished about half of my next 20, all are inked & I'm hoping to have them all finalized by today!

Hang in there, almost friday!

"Martian"War of the worlds Sketch card for cult stuff

Alright....on to some more War of the worlds! this is another sketch card done for cult stuff, In the U.K. that is going to be included in their upcoming war of the worlds trading card set. There are some really awesome artists on this set, so get your hands on a pack if you can!

This is a depiction of one of the martians as described in the novel by H.G. Wells. This guy & a few of my other martians came out a bit cuter than I would've liked. I was trying to go for that innocent look that some wild animals have even though they are extremely dangerous, but in the end I think Mean an scary would have been more appealing. That is what I will focus on for my next 20 cards.

I was scheduled to only do twenty, but one of the artists dropped out, so I have to put a rush on 20 more...but I will make sure I spend plenty of time on each card to allow for adequate quality. I just thought this was a really fun set to work on. Done with copic markers.

"Whats That Floating In the Water" War of The Worlds Sketch Card for Cult Stuff

Hello there, another War of The Worlds sketch card for Cult Stuff, over in the U.K. This is a trading card set based on the short novel my H.G. Wells. In this sketch card I took a more scenic approach. In the book they mentioned a few times some type of red matter that would be found floating down the river, & this was shortly after the military had dispatched one of the goliath tripods. I also decided to illustrate the fast growing "Red Weed" beginning to overtake the Landscape, especially quick around water. This was done in Copic markers.

"Trees Ablaze" War of the Worlds sketch card for cult stuff

Hello there! Today we have another one of my war of the worlds sketch cards for cult stuff, over in the U.K. This particular scene is in reference to the part of the story when the cannons were hiding amidst the tress after dispatching one of the tripods. The tripods began to hurl the black smoke & set fire to all the growth in order to snuff out the hiding artillery men. done with copic markers.

"Collecting Food" War of the worlds sketch card for cult stuff

Ok..back to some war of the worlds goodness. Another sketch card from my work on the war of the worlds trading card set for cult stuff over in the U.K. Good news, I have already done about 20 cards & they signed me up for another 20....so more tripods..aliens....& chaos. I had some cool ideas for other cards but ran out of cards. This card features a tri-pod collecting people for food. Decided to keep the background simple to focus on the people and since the book mentioned red skyes, I figures why not. Plus there's always at least one card that has a red background in my sets....always. done with copic markers & multiliners.

"It Came from the Cylinder" - war of the worlds sketch card for cult stuff

Here's another of my "war of the Worlds " sketch cards being put out by Cult Stuff over in the U.K. I have to admit...I had a ton of fun working on this set. you had a certain level of freedom to do what you want, as long as you new the literature, you were fine. I wish I could have done more, however people who wanted me on sets kept promising me work & never came through....so I got screwed. Watcha gonna do?

This card was inspired by the part of the novel when the first martian cylinder opened & the protagonist saw the creatures eyes glaring at him. Done with copic markers & multi-liners.

Happy Friday!

War Of The Worlds sketch card preview for Cult stuff

I figured we'd take a break from posting the step by step process pics & show you a preview of one of my war of the worlds cards that will be included in the upcoming set by cult stuff over in the U.K. This is a set that was inspired by H.G. wells literature & not by the movies. To be honest, I've never read it, so I went and grabbed a collection of his works..& I loved it. I love all the research you have to do for sketch card sets, yes, sometimes its a huge pain, but when you get to read great stories for research it opens you up to things you would never think to do. This card was completed with copic markers & multiliners.
