Walking dead sketch cover commission
Here is a walking dead sketch cover commission that I think I completely forgot to post.
I was asked to recreate a walking dead cover, but replace Rick grimes with the clients friend. Fun job!

Army of Darkness sketch cover commission!
Here's a commission for my buddy Nick. It's a sketch, on an army of darkness #1 blank variant comic. I have to admit that these covers are a real challenge.... They take ink halfway decent ( although it takes a bit longer to dry, so you have to be careful) but it doesn't take marker very well. Only lighter shades, and you can't blend, and the markers colors you do lay down, come out several shades lighter than they normally would due to the lack of absorbency of the stock. So I used a variety of ink washes , thin layers of markers & colored pencil to try & get the color to work. The results were better than I'd hoped, however it is far less vibrant and saturated than my normal marker drawings... These covers are best suited for black & gray...

Walking Dead #115 sketch cover commission!
walking dead #115 sketch cover commission.
This time it's another zombie random zombie, but unlike the silhouette sketch, I wanted to get in there & detail it out. I also got a chance to really test out my new fountain pen.
Copic markers for the muted spot colors to give it the same feel as the walking dead comic book art.

Walking dead #115 sketch cover commission, walker silhouette.
Happy Walking Dead Sunday! Although the show is on break, I never stop drawing zombies...lol
Here is another walking dead sketch cover that I've done recently. I illustrated a similar sketch previously, and some body liked it so much, they commissioned a similar piece on a walking dead #115 blank variant sketch cover.
Ink & copic markers.

Walking Dead #109 Comic Book Sketch Cover, Sophia.

So, I figured what the hell, lets break up the monotony of all this walking dead sketch card business WITH MORE WALKING DEAD!
This is a (image coics)Walking Dead #109 comic book Blank variant sketch cover of Sophia (after she has turned into a walker) from the hit AMC television show The Walking Dead, By robert kirkman and skybound industries. Done in markers & colored pencils by me, obviously. This puppy is off to be signed by the young actress who plays sophia on the show. I think that there are some finishing touches that need to be done, but I ran out of time and will finish it up, once its signed.
If you didn't know what a blank variant is, its a limited run comic book printed with a blank untreated cover, which allows an artist to put some original work on your very own comic book.
I really enjoyed drawing larger than a 2.5 x3.5 inch card...takes roughly the same time for me, but I like to be able to have room to squeeze in the subtle details, that you cant do as well on a sketch card.
Happy friday! Yay Zombies!

Walking Dead 109 Sketch Cover Commission

Here's one of the walking dead #109 comic covers that I drew. The client wanted me to zombify his daughter ( but not too much..LOL) who is the main character, and to put sophia and Penny on either side of her. really had a rough time finding a decent picture of the governors daughter ( penny). So you make due with what you got, but again, I would have gone with a better pic if I could find one.
( In case you don't know what a sketch cover is, They are actual comic books that are printed on a limited run, with blank untreated covers which are called "Blank Variant Covers. This allows an artists to do what they do, and that way you have a comic book, with original artwork on it. Kind of cool. Of course, directly behind the blank cover, you have the artwork that was used in the comic.)
This cover is going to be signed at comicon by the young ladies who play the roles of sophia and penny on the AMC hit show.
I have to comment on the quality of the stock on these covers, as it was EXCELLENT. Nice blends, very little bleed, fun to work with.
Did this one with copic markers & some spot treatments with color pencils. also used some acrylic inks for the splatters on the front and back of the cover.

The Incredible Hulk Comic Sketch cover Commission

Here is my first sketch cover that I have been requested to do. The little dude in the front is the clients son who also wanted to be a hulk! This one is going to be signed by Lou Ferrigno at comicon.
Well the first lesson in sketch covers that I learned is "not all sketch covers were created equal" The stock on this particular cover was garbage, very waxy. You can see in the 2nd progress pic that the copic markers I was using started to pool up and not absorb into the paper, thus making it impossible to blend the colors together. In the third progress pic you'll see that I had to go over the entire thing with colored pencils in order to add shading & to try to even out the blotchiness of the markers ( which to be quite honest, wasn't too much better, its like drawing on wax paper). So next time I get one of these, I'll have to try acrylic paint. I did want to try that rather than the colored pencils, however time constraints didn't allow. I had to finish three covers that night, and it took me until 5 am to get them done.
on the final pic I tackled the background. Now normally I'm against flat backgrounds, but I knew that a black background was going to make the highlights pop. I decided to encompass the main figures in black and to transition out with splatters using some black & white acrylic inks, instead of trying to shade out the transitions because of the fact that the copics weren't going to give me even gradations.
Anyway...lesson learned. The other two covers that I did were walking dead 109 covers, i'll post those later.
